Postdoctoral fellowship for studying galaxy evolution at cosmic noon

The Instituto de Estudios Astrofísicos (IEA) at Universidad Diego Portales (UDP) invites applications for a postdoctoral research fellowship to study the assembly of galaxies at cosmic noon (z~1-3). The postdoctoral fellow will use state-of-the-art high-resolution CO and dust continuum data from the ALMA CONDOR large program (LP) to conduct detailed studies of disk galaxy structure, kinematics and ISM properties at cosmic noon and pursue follow-up programs.

The researcher will work with Prof. Manuel Aravena at UDP and Prof. Jorge González-López at PUC, and may join other efforts led by our team, including the ALMA CHAMPS LP, JWST ORCHIDS (GO3 5974) or others depending on expertise and interest. The successful candidate will join a young, vibrant and international astronomy group of 11 faculty, 12 postdocs, and a Ph.D. program with ~20 students working on a broad range of research topics, ranging from the Solar System to the early Universe.

The position is for 2 years, with extension opportunities from ANID Fondecyt, Núcleo Milenio MINGAL, or CATA funds. The expected beginning of the position is April-Sep. 2025, with flexibility. While at UDP, successful candidates will qualify as members of the Chilean community and will be eligible for 10% privileged access to all telescopes in Chile, including ALMA, Gemini-S, VLT, Magellan, CTIO, CCAT, as well as to future facilities such as ELT, Vera Rubin and GMT.

Applications should be submitted by e-mail in pdf format to Prof. Manuel Aravena (manuel.aravenaa@mail.udp.cl) by February 16, 2025, with the subject “UDP postdoc application” to ensure full consideration. They should include a brief cover letter (1-page), a research statement (max. 3 pages; including current/previous research, and a research plan while working at UDP), and a CV (with publication list). In addition, applicants should arrange for 2 references willing to provide letters of recommendation to the same email address.

We encourage applications from women and minority groups.Questions can be directed to Manuel Aravena (manuel.aravenaa@mail.udp.cl)
