The Department of Astronomy at the University of Florida announces one postdoctoral position to carry out research on topics related to stellar and Galactic astrophysics in collaboration with Dr. Rana Ezzeddine’s research group. The contract will take place under the auspice of the international agreement between the University of Florida and the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC) for the development and scientific exploitation of the 10m Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC).

Tasks: Candidates with both observational and theoretical stellar astrophysics backgrounds are welcome to apply. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to collaborate on various interdisciplinary projects with Dr. Ezzeddine. The expected research involves broad applications to observations, analysis and interpretation of stellar data collected from large spectroscopic and photometric surveys of the Milky Way, with the goal to understand the origin and evolution of the chemical elements, as well as probing the evolution and structure of our Galaxy. The selected candidate will have privileged access to the GTC, and will be encouraged to lead proposals as Principal Investigator in joint efforts with IAC researchers. They will also have access to the high-performance supercomputing cluster HiPerGator at the University of Florida.

Duration of appointment: The selected applicant is expected to start the appointment no later than Spring 2022. The position will be initially awarded for one year and, contingent upon strong performance and availability of funds, may be renewed for up to three years. The candidate will be based at the University of Florida in Gainesville FL, but is encouraged and expected to spend several (minimum 2) months each year at the IAC to foster collaborations between the two institutions.

Requirements: Applicants must have a PhD in Astrophysics, or closely related fields, by the date of appointment. A transcript will not be considered “official” if a designation of “Issued to Student” is visible.
