Missions

We invite applications for a postdoctoral position at Strasbourg Astronomical Observatory (ObAS) to participate in the EU-funded project H2020 – SPACE – XMM2ATHENA.

Activities

The postdoc will lead efforts to expand the functionalities of the statistical multi-wavelength cross-matching software developed by the ARCHES FP-7 European project formerly led by Strasbourg. The improved identification and classification tool is key for the project. We also expect the successful applicant to actively take part in the scientific exploitation of this tool.

Skills

The applicant is expected to have a PhD in Physics or Astronomy, experience in high energy astrophysics and programming skills.
Scientific interests close to those of the hosting team (X-ray binaries, ULXs, X-ray source populations in the Milky Way, the Magellanic Clouds and nearby galaxies) would be welcome.

Work Context

The ObsAS harbours the Centre de Données astronomiques de Strasbourg (CDS) and is one of the member institutions of the XMM-Newton Survey Science Centre (SSC). The institute is also actively involved in future projects such as SVOM, IXPE, eXTP and Athena.

XMM2ATHENA is a collaboration of 9 European Institutes including members of the XMM-Newton SSC to develop innovative methods to maximize the return from the current X-ray observatory XMM-Newton and prepare for the forthcoming X-ray mission Athena.

Additional Information

Candidates should send a curriculum vitae, a list of publications, a summary of research interests and contact details of two referees. Review of applications will start on the 1st of September and will continue until the position is filled. ObAS is an equal-opportunity employer. We encourage applications from women and minorities.
