Descripción/Description:
The EHT group at the Instituto de Astrofísica de Andalucía (CSIC) offers a four years PhD contract funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation associated with the research grant "supermassive black holes and relativistic jets", with reference PID2019-108995GB-C21.
The PhD student will focus her/his research on the study of accretion onto supermassive black holes and relativistic jet formation. The PhD student will have access to the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT), the only existing facility that can actually spatially resolve the accretion onto the supermassive black holes in M87 and SgrA*. With a mass three orders of magnitude smaller than that of M87 and dynamical timescales of minutes instead of days, SgrA* offers the opportunity to make the first real-time movies of black hole accretion. Similarly, studying the magnetic field in the vicinity of a black hole and how it affects accretion and jet launching is now possible with the EHT. These observations will be complemented with our own EHT, PI-led observations, as well as 3 mm GMVA+ALMA and space VLBI RadioAstron observations led by our group to provide a comprehensive view of black hole accretion, jet formation, and its interaction with the host galaxy at multiple spatial scales.
The PhD will be supervised by José Luis Gómez (jlgomez@iaa.es) at the Instituto de Astrofísica de Andalucía - CSIC (Granada). The PhD student will join one of the most relevant research groups of the EHT, which includes one of the coordinators of the EHT Imaging Working Group (WG), responsible for producing all the images obtained by the EHT, one of the coordinators of the EHT Scattering WG, and the secretary of the EHT Management Team.
Applications must be submitted online at the Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación website here, between October 13 and 27.
The IAA-CSIC promotes a diverse and inclusive environment, and encourages women and minorities to apply.
