Descripción/Description:
The LST collaboration has an immediate opening for a person to contribute onsite to the night operation of the LST-1 Telescope.
LST-1 is the first telescope of the future Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) to be built at the Observatorio Roque de los Muchachos in La Palma, Canary Islands, Spain. LST-1 is a ground-based Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescope with a 23m diameter reflective surface, studying extreme phenomena in the Universe using high energy gamma rays above 20 GeV. The telescope is currently in its commissioning phase, but nightly data is taken and is being used for first scientific studies and publications. Further information about LST-1 can be found in this link: http://www.lst1.iac.es/
The LST collaboration has been operating the telescope since 2019 by sending operators from its institution members on a monthly basis to the telescope site. In view of the difficulties that institution members are facing to send operators to La Palma due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we are looking for an Operator that will be based at La Palma and will participate in the nightly data taking. The number of nights to be covered should be about 15 nights per month.
Due to the international nature of the collaboration, a good English level is mandatory. Experience in operating telescopes and physics background are appreciated but not mandatory. The position is available as early as January 1st, 2021. The contract will be through the Institut de Física d'Altes Energies (IFAE) in Barcelona and will be for six months, with the possibility to extend for another 6 months.
LST is an equal opportunity collaboration committed to diversity in the workplace, and we welcome applications from all qualified candidates. Women are particularly encouraged to apply.
Applicants should send a CV by email to Juan Cortina (LST Co-PI), Daniel Mazin (Project Manager), and Martin Will (Operations Coordinator) using the email address lst.lapalma.jobs@gmail.com. Names of reference persons are also desirable. Applications received before December 8 will be considered with higher priority. Requests for further details on the position should also be sent to the email address mentioned above.
