Postdoctoral contract at the Paris Observatory on galaxy evolution and deep-learning

Observatoire de Paris
Fecha limite/Deadline:

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral research position in galaxy evolution at the Paris Observatory in close collaboration with the astronomy department of UCSC. The successful applicant will work with Marc Huertas-Company, David Koo, Joel Primack and Avishai Dekel on the application of unsupervised feature learning algorithms (deep-learning) to high resolution cosmological hydrodynamical simulations. He will namely explore the ability of deep neural networks to extract signatures of physical processes (i.e. feedback strength) from realistic mock observations and look for those features in multi-wavelength observations from current deep surveys (e.g. CANDELS) Please contact M. Huertas-Company (marc.huertas @ for additional information. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Astronomy or Physics. Experience with numerical simulations (and or machine learning) would be appreciated. The position will be for 18 months with a possible extension to 24 months depending on funding. Support for research and observing travel will be provided. In particular the applicant is expected to spend part of his time in California. The positon is available as early as March 2017. To apply, send a coverletter, CV with bibliography, and statement of research interests (3 pages or less) to with the subject line "Postdoc position: Deep-Learning"; PDF format is required. Three letters of recommendation should be sent directly to with the subject line "Letter of Recommendation for [Applicant Name]”. Applications received by January 20, 2017 will receive full consideration.
